Graduating college seniors who have had previous work experience and active community involvement over the summer may have an edge over others when it comes to job search and employment receptions.

Of course, many companies desire fresh minds straight out of school, but a previous work experience and productive use of free time can be a determining factor whether a candidate gets the job or not

If a student has avoided internships while in school, most likely he or she will find one upon graduation.  A solid summer internship or any type of employment before a career can help strengthen your resume, but it will take the pressure off when it comes to job search, and cut the time it takes to land on a desired job.
